Customer Reviews:
  1. More background than foreground, but beautiful
This is a collection of mood pieces written by Lisa Gerrard for the film _Whale Rider_. There are a lot of echoes of Dead Can Dance here: a tendency for the compositions to involve first laying down a drone, then some slowly changing chords over that, and sometimes some of Ms Gerrard's own...
  2. Breathtaking, beautiful
Two of my favorite artists are Dead Can Dance and Eric Serra (for his work on "The Big Blue", mainly). With the OST to Whalerider, Dead Can Dance former lead singer, Lisa Gerrard, put together the best of the two. The music that accompanies New Zealand's most succesful and touching...

Soundtrack Review: THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE » GordonandtheWhale.com

What would be the son of Saddam Hussein? Even more troubling, what would it be like to be look-a son like that? DEVIL'S DOUBLE takes this idea to extreme levels with Dominic Cooper challenged to play two real son Hussein, Uday Hussein, and his double, Latif Yahia. Composer Christian Henson (sanctified) takes the task of creating the score of a world in which the stakes are still high and there are no rules.Henson certainly increases the challenge of composing a score that is interesting, disturbing, and immersive.

Henson us begins with a slow burn of a song, "Veteran", which is almost eerily calm before the largest and percussion elements of the horn begins to flow in the flesh and the song. Almost like a charmer snake, the track is slightly hypnotic, but never lets you forget that something sinister is brewing. The tracks that follow are the same style and it is not until "Metamorphosis" that the pace again and theme of the film becomes truly established. With an extensive track listing (twenty-eight pieces in all), it is logical that Henson took his time to develop themes and ideas, but it is almost surprising to hear how mellow tracks were open for film focus mainly on the excess, control, ego and violence....

Soundtrack Review: WINNIE THE POOH » GordonandtheWhale.com

The classic world of WINNIE THE POOH is brought to life not only by the animation and distinct voices (and personalities) of the characters that populate the Hundred Acre Woods, but also through the film’s music. For this adventure, composer Henry Jackman’s score adds a underlying layer of magic to the story along with songs to engage the audience directly such as “It’s Gonna Be Great” and “The Backson Song.” There has always been a distinct sound to WINNIE THE POOH and that sound has been retained here, along with the addition of some new tracks to keep things fresh and fun.

From the opening lines of “Winnie The Pooh,” you are not only transported into this world, you are also introduced to (or reacquainted with) its characters, the most important of whom is the man himself, Winnie The Pooh (that “willy nilly silly ol’ bear”). For this newest film, Zooey Deschanel sings the classic song and her voice is the perfect accompaniment to the catchy ditty many of us know or may be hearing for the first time. Deschanel also lends her voice to a couple of the new songs featured in the film, “A Very Important Thing To Do” and “So Long,” which are not only enjoyable on their own, they also help add to the message and intent of the story. Much like a musical, WINNIE THE POOH will have a character reach a certain plot point and then follow it up with a song that helps guide that idea along. These songs are never created to speak down to children, but instead work to engage younger viewers while still appealing to older audience members as well.
