CD review: 'Women on the Verge' cast recording

Not all movies to become a shout Broadway musical. Pedro Almodóvar is fabulous breakthrough film from 1988 seems a particularly unlikely, with its interweaving multiple plots in a whirlwind of new released film and post-Franco Madrid. Indeed, Bartlett Sher directed Lincoln Center Theater of the author Jeffrey Lane and music composer-lyricist new David Yazbek did not last long.But the original cast CD is a pleasant surprise, not counterintuitive winner Stephen Sondheim scored with Bergman masterpiece "Smiles of a Summer Night" ("A Little Night Music") but much more interesting than Maury Yeston to Fellini's "8 1 / 2" ("Nine"). Yazbek ("The Full Monty") avoids the obvious trap of trying to match or enhance the emotional states of women 'Almodovar, leaving artistic musical understatement do the job.Orchestra Music Director Jim Abbott and the cast delightfully offer quotes cleverly eclectic score, bands corrida, flamenco and film music of the 40 to traffic, Nino Rota, and Latin pop. Sherie Rene versatility Scott anchors the show, with arrears of contributions of women turned away Patti LuPone (the "invisible"), Laura Benanti of hysteria fast-pitch ("Model Behavior") and suave baritone Brian Stokes Mitchell as full an irresistible cad.

"Tomorrow tragedy, comedy tonight!" With this song, one of the most famous numbers ever opening, the brilliant career of Stephen Sondheim as a composer and lyricist of Broadway was born. Sondheim wrote the lyrics in the history of classical and gypsy West Side, but he wanted to compose as well, and after 1954 was derailed Saturday night, a funny thing happened on the way to the Forum (1962 ) gave him his first Broadway show.Based on the Roman comedies of Plautus, is a fluffy light entertainment (as promised in the opening), led by Zero Mostel as a slave Pseudolus scandalous intriguing. John Selya Heads Bushnell-Bound Twyla Tharp's "Come Fly Away ...

Tony Award-nominee John Selya heads the dancing cast in the touring production of Twyla Tharp's "Come Fly Away," which will play the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in June.

Other members from the Broadway cast who will be in the tour are Matthew Stockwell Dibble, Cody Green, Laurie Kanyok, Marielys Molina and Ron Todorowski .

The tour begins next week in Atlanta where the show premiered prior to Broadway at the Alliance regional theater.

The show features original masters of Frank Sinatra's voice, backed by a live on-stage band. The show includes original arrangements by Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Quincy Jones , as well as new  arrangements created for the production.
