Front-row seat can be distracting

Three women and two men playing classical music, and all I could think about was who was romantically involved with whom. Last weekend we visited my parents in Mammoth. Friday night they took us to the Mammoth Lakes Music Festival at Cerro Coso College. The concert included pieces by Mozart, Schumann and Moritz Moszkowski, a composer of whom I had never heard.

If their instruments had gone silent or the audience deaf, you could have still enjoyed the concert because the Sierras were hulking through the glass doors on the right, basking in the late summer light.

However, we were not deaf, the instruments were not silent and furthermore, we were sitting in the front row and we could hear every note of Mozart's String Quintet in G Minor, K. 516.

Being in the first row was terribly intimate. I became fixated on the single droplet of sweat that clung to side of the neck of violinist Lina Bahn. Why wouldn't it move? Droplets, by their nature, are round and you would have no more expected that droplet to cling to the side of her neck than you would a barrel not run down from the top of Mammoth Mountain.
