is a Soprano Ukelele when I played the one they had in the shop it sounded so beautiful ... but when the clerk who was brought in a box and listening to himself, he did not sound this pretty amazing.

Yes, both "external" string are the highest, so they are thinner.
If the ukulele is brand new, yes, it will take some time for the strings to break in. Strings sound crappy for the first days, the more they spread much, so you're constantly tuning.
