I've heard some people say they are and others say they aren't. I play the alto saxophone. Playing in an orchestra interests me, but I don't even know if saxophones are in an orchestra.
Sadly, they aren't considered a regular part of a symphony orchestra.
However, as a flutist, I have had the pleasure of playing quite a few orchestral pieces that use the saxophone.....Prokofiev's Lt. Kiji and Larsiene Suite are two wonderful examples.

Aren't they made out of brass?
they are part of woodwinds because thay have a key for every finger. for example, all brass instruments(trumpet, trombone, and french horn) all have 3 valves.
