Back to School Prices Set to Jump
CHARLESTON -- Parents can expect to spend up to 25 percent more this year on back to school supplies and extracurricular activities. That's according to the latest Huntington Bank "Backpack Index." It is by far the largest annual increase in the index's six year history.
The jump is the result of hefty increases in "pay-to-play" fees for school sports and other extra-curricular activities.
The added expense is definitely felt by band members at George Washington High School in Charleston as well as their parents. Monday was the first day of practice for the group before school starts next month.
Justin Schoolcraft is field commander for George Washington's marching band this year. He plays the alto saxophone. "The saxophone itself costs about $2,000," said Schoolcraft, a senior at the school.
Senior Ahmed Mian has been playing the clarinet since 6th grade.
