A Cross-disciplinary Coup
This book is a fresh take on New England history. The author's broad interests (ecology, biology, languages, herbal medicine, map-making, history, illustration, photography, and long-distance bicycling, among others) allow him to have cross-disciplinary insights that escape the specialist... -
A refreshing insight...
A wonderful sharing of the author's journey into understanding the history and environment of his home.Though tinged with sadness at how much has been lost, there is a refreshing sense of joy in Hardy's talent for making connections and unraveling the past. The book is well laid out, featuring...

The primary emphasis of this method book is developing the three essential concepts for learning to play the flute which are: 1) Learning the names of the notes on the music staff, 2) Learning the value of the notes and how to count them, and 3) Learning how to finger the notes on the flute. As new notes are introduced on the lines and spaces of the music staff, the note name, note value, method of counting, and fingering of the note on the flute is clearly illustrated. Each of the essential music elements is presented clearly and sequentially. Each presentation is followed by several exercises and original melodies that are specifically designed to develop reading ability, technique, and musicianship. Students will understand and develop each newly learned music concept as they progress from lesson to lesson. Every lesson builds on those that came before, giving students a chance to practice what they have learned and reinforcing skills...

I found this to be a somewhat odd disc in that each work seems so different. My two personal favorites that I did feel strongly about were Triquetra and Night Songs. The booklet notes point out that Arlene Zallmans music was not performed much during her lifetime and, clearly, not recorded. Annotator Martin Boykin comments that this was due in part to the composers disinterest in the marketplace and that her music seems to be consistently out of context with the work of other mainstream composers writing at the same benchmark time periods. It seems to me, while listening and reading, that Arlene Zallman was a bit of an iconoclast. Almost as if each piece says I dont care that its different from the others or as if to say I dont care what other people are writing. She sounds like a genuine American original who never got the attention that, perhaps, she deserved during her lifetime.
native flute making - notes choking out in Musical Instrument ...
Greetings all. Been making flutes for a while. Some good, some bad. A problem I've had occur on more than one occasion is my notes become weaker and choke out as I play up the scale. On a 6 hole flute for example, the lowest 3 notes are clear and powerful, however as I continue up and play the highest 3 holes, the notes become thin and finally choke out unless I use a lot more breath. I can hear the notes. They are there and in tune, just very weak. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance and what a great forum to have! my first guess would be nodal interference. this sometimes occurs when the bore length is too short for the bore diameter. most times it's due to the upper notes being too high on the flute. if the top hole is closer to the TSH than the bottom hole is to the functional end of the flute the top notes drop off or get screechy.
other issues can be improper tsh angle, improper airflow split or flue depth too deep or shallow....
