Very comfortable
This hand guard is thin enough that it doesn't alter your hand position too much. It keeps your hand from sliding, which makes it much more comfortable to play for longer periods of time. Be aware that you may need a second person to help you lace it tightly on the horn, though. -

Fits great and works well to protect the horn. My daughter says that it improves her grip and looks cool...what more could you ask?

Yeah, that's about it. I have found that the tone on a 177 is brighter, but is there anything else?
They are the same horn until you come to the bell. The reason the 177 is brighter is that the 179 has a larger bell taper. If you have them beside each other you can see the "swell of the bell" on the 179. They both end in the same size of bell but the 179 is larger
