The first is made of some sort of cheap ABS plastic, whereas the second one ($400 more) is made of the wood they typically use in the clarinet. I want something I can grow in to. Is the extra $400 worth it?

I go with the Buffet E11 .Yes , it is worth it and yes you want the grenadilla wood . The better instruments have more lasting keys and materials an the pads seat better.
When buying though know that all stock mouthpieces suck. Get a Selmer HS* or equivelant , must be
