Tammany Talk: Gospel music in spotlight this week
Known around the world, the Dynamic Smooth Family will be honored closer to home with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the seventh annual President’s Arts Awards on Friday, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Lacombe Heart Hospital, 64030 Louisiana 434 in Lacombe.
The Rev. Cynthia Plummer, daughter of founders Rosa Lee and Wilbert Smooth Sr., said the recognition wasn’t expected.
“We feel so blessed to know that someone thought so much of us to be included.”
But she said the honor goes to her mother, Rosa Lee Smooth. “It’s because of her vision we are who were are today, the Smooth family. I wish mom was here to enjoy the moment.”
Founded in Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, the Smooth family has suffered the loss of their parents and more recently, bass player Wilbert Smooth Jr. in 2008, and lead guitarist Donald Smooth in 2010.
Plummer said fans from all over the world return every year when they play the Gospel tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell. She said there were “familiar faces” in April who noticed that Donald Smooth was not with them.
