Alone in the field
Most guitar magazines are about mainly equipment and to a lesser extent, the thrash/metal/punk/whatever hero of the moment. "Acoustic Guitar" is different. It does talk about equipment, sure, but the primary focus has always been the music and the artists. I have a couple years' worth...

Self-taught Trace Bundy on a roll
Acclaimed acoustic guitar ace Trace Bundy's astounding six-string gymnastics -- a combination of two-handed fret tapping, intricate, rapid fire arpeggios and innovative capo techniques that has earned him the sobriquet "The Acoustic Ninja" -- are even more impressive considering he is entirely self-taught.
"I never had a lesson or anything," says Bundy, who started playing at age 10 when he and his brother chipped in $5 each for a neighbor's used guitar.
"Maybe I'd be twice as good if I had had lessons, but I kind of doubt it. I think not having a structure to it opened me up to try new things. I didn't know any better, so why not play the guitar this way."
Bundy's prowess has made the Colorado native, who performs tonight at DeSoto Civic Center, a fast-rising star among fans of his kind of music, which is a still vaguely defined subgenre -- despite the successes of like-minded artists like Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, and Tony Furtado -- that combines elements of classical, jazz, bluegrass, folk and world music.
The Eliminators | Vintage Guitar® magazine
There are many veins of surf rock; traditional, punk, classic instro, fusion, and many more. The SoCal-based Eliminators fit comfortably into the traditional instro/surf sound, presenting a wall of Fender-fueled reverb that would have been hip in 1963 – around the time most of the guys in this band were probably toddlers.
Clearly, the emphasis here is on “reverence,” as the Eliminators work painstakingly to conjure a vintage sound with just a few modern allusions worked in. Check out, for example, the faux-f lamenco riffing on “Hang On” and the lilting (even corny!) melody of “Walking Tall” – however, it’s so authentic that it wouldn’t sound out of place on a vintage Hank Marvin and the Shadows vinyl 45 from way back when. Guitarists Joe Kurkowski and John Blair (originally of Jon and the Nightriders) also carefully mix Strat twang with Mexi-Cali acoustic guitar strumming on “Snake Eyes,” adding yet more credibility to the surf sound (many modern surf bands forget the role of acoustic guitar in classic surf and instro). Add some honkin’ tenor and baritone sax riffs and a tight rhythm section, and you have a excellent reason to grab this platter....
Guild Standard Series Acoustics | Vintage Guitar® magazine

Founded by a jazz guitarist as jazz-box builder, the Guild company also built a solid reputation with its ’50s acoustic guitars. The brand’s profile as an acoustic builder was certainly given a you-can’t-put-a-price-on-that bit of exposure when Richie Havens hammered on a D-40 in front of 400,000 people at Woodstock! Another unforgettable Guild gig was Stevie Ray Vaughan ripping through “Rude Mood” while playing a JF-65-12 (that’s right, a 12-string!) on an early episode of MTV’s “Unplugged.”
Guild hopes to continue that legacy with its new Standard Series – six guitars that offer strong traditional options that aim at the heart of what most acoustic players seek in a guitar. All six have Sitka-spruce tops and Red-spruce bracing, and 12″-radius fretboards with dot inlays on a 25 1/2″-scale neck. The line consists of the small-bodied F30 (mahogany back and sides) and F30R (rosewood back and sides), the square-shoulder dreadnought D-40 (mahogany) and D-50 (rosewood), and two jumbo models, the all-maple F50, and the mahogany F-212XL 12-string jumbo (which isn’t reviewed here).
